Te Pātaka Taoka

Protecting Southland's taonga for generations to come.

Invercargill's museum collection contains almost four million items. Together, they tell the stories of Southland's past.

While the footprint of our city's new museum is set to be larger than that of the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, it simply is not feasible to have each item within the collection on public display at all times.

  • Te Pātaka Taoka Southern Regional Collections Facility, at Tisbury, houses items appropriately when they are not on public display

  • Its build was completed in December 2023. The process to move collection items from the Southland Museum and Art Gallery was completed in mid-2024

  • The 1650m2 facility includes state-of-the-art shelving, cold storage areas, and offices and workrooms
